New data platform paves the way for Verdo's digitalization strategy

Verdo

In collaboration with twoday, Verdo has developed a data platform where all data is collected and processed systematically across the large energy conglomerate in the short term.

An outdated IT infrastructure hindered future digitalization efforts.

Since its founding in 1874, Verdo has been part of the everyday lives of Danes, initially providing drinking water to the citizens of Randers. Today it is a large and purpose-driven company that operates and develops sustainable critical infrastructure for the benefit of society. This infrastructure generates large amounts of data, which can be converted into valuable insights for Verdo about their energy production and customers' preferences and consumption.

With such substantial volumes of data, a structured approach is essential for collecting, processing, and utilizing it. Verdo previously lacked this approach. According to Peter Nordahn, Head of Water and Digital Supply at Verdo, a significant portion of their data was also locked with various suppliers, presenting challenges for the energy company in Jutland:

“We found that our data was often locked within the supplier's solution, making it challenging to utilize it according to our needs. Furthermore, our company lacked a streamlined system structure, hindering our ability to access the right data in the desired format and quality. Consequently, we required an integrated solution owned by us, capable of collecting and centralizing all our data.”

Furthermore, Peter Nordahn talks about Verdo's long-term strategy to meet customer demands:

"In a competitive market where our customers demand top-tier service and the chance for profound insights into their consumption, we have been unable to meet these expectations with our previous solutions."

To be able to offer the desired service to customers and process the large amounts of data, twoday was tasked with building a cloud-based data platform for Verdo. The new solution ensures that data is now collected and processed systematically and enables Verdo's systems to communicate more effectively.

It's crucial to stay aligned with the evolving technology landscape.

Verdo's data platform is constructed on Microsoft Azure, offering numerous benefits. For instance, it ensures future-proofing and scalability due to Azure's continuous development. Additionally, it empowers Verdo to leverage advanced analytical tools, including AI and Machine Learning. All thanks to the latest technology according to Mads Kronborg Eriksen, Senior Client Engagement Manager at twoday:

"The data platform is built on Azure, which always means the latest and most modern technology. This allows Verdo to include all the systems they have and other parts of Verdo. This enables them to use data more actively going forward."

Regarding implementing the latest technology at Verdo, Peter Nordahn says:

"At Verdo, we've strategically committed to digital transformation. Hence, we've developed and implemented a state-of-the-art cloud-based data platform to ensure alignment with the evolving technology landscape."

Peter Nordahn also points out that the new solution provides Verdo with far more opportunities than before, which also benefits the customers:

"Previously, we relied on disparate solutions from various suppliers, often incompatible with our own systems. That's no longer an issue. With twoday's data platform, we can fully leverage our internal solutions, enhancing efficiency and meeting both our and our customers' needs for insights."

Unique collaborative approach

When implementing a comprehensive solution like the one Verdo has received, a close collaboration is vital. According to Lone Majland, Head of Digital Supply at Verdo, the collaboration has been fantastic.

“At Verdo, we are pleased with the collaboration with twoday and the valuable contributions made by their project manager and consultants. twoday operates on a co-building approach, actively involving the customer in solution development. This approach has enabled my colleagues and me to gain a comprehensive understanding of the data platform's structure and operation, while our consultants have developed the skills to operate it independently. I believe this approach is fantastic.“

As Verdo assumes greater responsibility for the data platform, twoday's role in the project will diminish. Nonetheless, our collaboration persists on other new projects, as Verdo embarks on an extensive digitalization journey, and twoday remains committed to supporting them every step of the way.

"At Verdo, we're delighted with our collaboration with twoday and the valuable contributions made by their project manager and consultants. twoday operates on a co-building approach, actively involving the customer in solution development. This approach has allowed my colleagues and me to gain a thorough understanding of the data platform's structure and operation, while our own consultants have developed the skills to independently operate it. I believe this approach is fantastic."
