An easier everyday life with the Danish Health Insurance Card app

Danes now have easy access to their yellow health insurance card through an app – an app that is developed by twoday in collaboration with the Agency for Digital Government, the Danish Ministry of Health, the Danish Regions and Local Government Denmark.

The Challenge

As part of the work to digitise the public service sector in Denmark, the Agency for Digital Government, the Danish Ministry of Health, the Danish Regions and Local Government Denmark started a collaboration with twoday.

twoday’s delivery is based on many years of experience with assignments for ministries and agencies and with joint public data registers.

The Solution

Together, we created a unique platform for delivery of digital cards in Denmark. We developed the Health Insurance Card App, which can be downloaded as an app for smartphones.

The app was the second ID-certificate to receive a digital supplement. The Health Insurance Card App is built on the same technological platform as the Danish Driving Licence App, which twoday developed as well. It can be used in the same way as using mobile payments, which many Danes are quite familiar with.

twoday had a team consisting of a project leader, a Scrum Master, frontend and backend developers and testers.

"Our experience with containerized architecture meant that we were able to build the alternative for a cloud solution, which the project demanded,” says René Stampe Lund, managing director, twoday.

“Today, many Danes are used to having their most important things on their phones. Having both the Driving Licence App and the Health Insurance Card App, it soon is no longer necessary to carry physical cards.”

The Value

When Danes are going to the emergency, doctor, library or are using the physical yellow health insurance card in other connections, they no longer need to reach for their wallet. If they have a wallet at all, that is.

The Health Insurance Card App has been available since the middle of March of 2021. Danes have welcomed the Health Insurance Card App on a large scale as a supplement for its physical counterpart. In fact two million Danes have downloaded the Health Insurance Card App. The app is used approximately 49,500 times a day or 35 times a minute.

twoday has the possibility to create even more cards digitally through the unique platform used for issuance of digital cards in Denmark. The citizens and the public systems are able to exchange information in a simple and safe manner in the future. Thereby contributing to a more cohesive public sector.
